South Carolina is in the midst of stroke crises. A disproportionate number of the victims are African-American. The Stroke Belt Elimination Initiative is one part of the effort to reduce the racial, ethnic and economic disparity in health status in South Carolina. Progress requires informed and active leaders. The goal of this Institute is to reinforce this principle and to emphasize the unique relationship between environmental protection, human health, environmental justice and economic development as essential parts of sustainable community development.
